KDDI and Ruckus detail Japanese Wi-Fi offload plans. Japanese number two operator KDDI is set to build what was described as “the world’s first and largest ‘instant-on’ Wi-Fi access and mobile data offload service.” The company is working with vendor Ruckus Wireless to build the network, which will enable it to shift traffic from its mobile infrastructure while providing seamless, high-speed data services to customers in the country. Free Space Optics

Free Space Optics For Point-To-Point Communication Links

Free Space Optics is secure wireless technology that rivals Fiber Optics. Free Space Optics is a "line of sight" technology that uses spectral beams of light to transfer data. It is a dedicated and secure network that can transmit and receive up to 10 Gbps of data, voice and video communications at the speed of light. Fractionally less to install than Fiber Optics, Free Space Optics is the fastest dedicated network and the most affordable and secure means of transmitting and receiving data between two sites where fiber optics is required. There are no licensing or monthly fees so once installed Free Space Optics provides uninterrupted data communication.

Sabertech Wireless And Free Space Optics

Sabertech Wireless is an authorized dealer, installer and designer; certified in Free Space Optics and FCC licensed radio frequencies. Professional design and installation considers all obstructions, angles and environmental measures. Normally a two to three day install, FSO is the most logical and affordable technology of secure dedicated data communication between multi-site organizations. Fiber Optics is very costly and sometimes not a viable solution based upon legal right of ways for trenching and running of the optics. Free Space Optics will pay for itself when you consider the initial installation costs of Fiber Optics.

How FSO works

FSO technology is simple. It's based on connectivity between FSO-based optical wireless units, each consisting of an optical transceiver with a transmitter and a receiver to provide full-duplex (bi-directional) capability. Each optical wireless unit uses an optical source, plus a lens or telescope that transmits light through the atmosphere to another lens receiving the information. At this point, the receiving lens or telescope connects to a high-sensitivity receiver via optical fiber. This FSO technology approach has a number of advantages:

  • Requires no RF spectrum licensing.
  • Is easily upgradeable, and its open interfaces support equipment from a variety of vendors, which helps enterprises and service providers protect their investment in embedded telecommunications infrastructures.
  • Requires no security software upgrades.
  • Is immune to radio frequency interference or saturation.
  • Can be deployed behind windows, eliminating the need for rooftop rights.
